I hope you are doing well and keeping safe with your family and loved ones during this challenging time we are all experiencing together. 

These are uncertain times, especially for those businesses having to adjust to a ‘remote’ way of working and in this quick 2 min read I wanted to share some lessons with you about running a remote team over the last 6 years.

To start with, I have not sent a particular email to our customers mentioning how we are handling this internally simply because we have no disruption in service.

So, there’s hope.

Our Team at Three Steps Business operate 100% remotely and globally on a daily basis. 

You might say I’m a bit of an expert on this because we’ve been working this way for the last 6 years.

And I thought if we can do it, so can you!

But it was never an easy job to do. It's not as simple as creating a home office and continuing business as usual.

Here are some of the common mistakes often made in a remote setting:

  • You have a disengaged team that gets to work from home and don’t understand how it all works, there’s no adaptation and you lose them
  • Lack of communication, falling short with communication is one of the common mistakes that leads your team to a lack of output
  • Lack of processes and systems, if you don’t have a clear process that you follow your team may end up confused about what they should be doing and when
  • Not having common ground where things get tracked and updates are given causes projects to slow down and client delivery starts to suffer
  • Need of increased team meetings that ultimately chew up time and productivity
  • All the above lead to the worst of all… stress creeping up… which we need to keep under control as your immune system relies on avoiding cortisol spikes

All these mistakes are very common especially during this time of great uncertainty where we are all forced to rethink the way we do business and how we manage our team over the months to come.

I know what you are thinking, “I know I’ll be facing these challenges and it’ll be alright, we will adapt.”

Yep, it might happen, slowly… but in my opinion, there’s not much time to ‘adapt’ or ‘wait and see’.
